ETL Developer Resume Guide

3 ETL Developer Resume Examples - Here's What Works In 2024

Andrew McAfee, a well-renowned researcher, once said: “the world is one big data problem”. There is an incredible volume of data worldwide produced by companies and users. We could think that this amount of data is going to collapse the system, but it can actually become a powerful tool when used wisely.

Companies can leverage those large datasets to make data-backed business decisions that drive them to success. Yet, data is not of much use in its raw form, we need to Extract, Transform, and Load it to make it consumable. This is precisely the role of an ETL developer. The ETL process is a highly technical method that helps companies with their business intelligence efforts. Today, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about this occupation and how to create an ATS-friendly ETL developer resume.

There are numerous ways in which you can use processed data, machine learning, and data analytics. However, any data processing system requires data to be in a consumable format for both humans and machines. To get to this point, data needs to be extracted and converted. Once, it has the desired format, it must be loaded into a database or data warehouse.

The professional behind this process is called ETL developer, and it’s part of the data engineering team. ETL stands for Extract, Transform, Load, as you may have noticed above. Now, let’s break this down:

  • Extract: Any business out there stores data in multiple Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. These applications integrate several business operations such as logistics, finance, project management, customer service, and human resources. A good example of this is a CRM system that stores historical data related to customer connections. In the ETL process, these are called sources and this is where ETL developers will extract the data.
  • Transform: Once they’ve obtained the data, the ETL developer will transform it into a consumable format. Usually, data analysts, who are also part of the engineering team, define the data models and formats in which it must be converted. For example, instead of using 0.50 cents, 01,70 they will use $0.50, $1.70.
  • Load: Then, we’ll move on to the final stage which is loading the data into a database where it can be manipulated by other team members.

In this guide, we'll cover how to emphasize all three areas of the ETL process in your resume, with proven samples.
