Writing LinkedIn Recommendations: Tips To Remember
Someone you've enjoyed working with has asked you to write them a LinkedIn recommendation. What do you say to make your colleague or friend stand out, while still coming across as genuine? Here are a few easy tips to keep in mind when you're writing a LinkedIn recommendation for someone:
• Open with a strong, positive statement: Start with a sentence that will get the attention of recruiters, hiring managers and your contact's prospects. A good example is something like "It’s honestly rare to come across someone as incredible as Ashley." or 'Annie is a powerhouse of intelligence, creativity, and thoughtfulness.'
• Describe your relationship: This adds credibility to your recommendation. Be short and concise. Something like "I've had the pleasure of collaborating with Samantha on over 15 design projects, for over six years at Resume Worded Co." If you're writing a recommendation for a friend (e.g. it's an informal relationship), only stress your professional relationship. Recruiters often find it unprofessional if they find friends writing recommendations. For example, to put this into practice, don't say "I'm Samantha's friend from college and we've worked...", just use, "Samantha and I managed the ABC budget at Resume Worded University."
• Highlight a 'stand-out' characteristic: Brainstorm one or two skills this person does better than anyone else. Are they self-motivated? Something like, "I am constantly in awe of Ashley's grit and determination, as well as her ability to positively deal with challenging experiences." is an excellent example.
• End with a strong recommendation: Close out your recommendation with a summary line, something like, "I'd work with him again in a heartbeat." is a simple example.
