Good start! But there is still room for improvement. We've explained ways you can improve your profile below.

Headline

0%
Needs Review

Your LinkedIn headline is the most seen component of your LinkedIn profile. It appears everywhere your name appears on LinkedIn, including on LinkedIn and Google search results, and any content you comment on or share. Here's how your headline looks:

Reid Hoffman

Entrepreneur. Product Strategist. Investor.

Your headline is good, but we think it can still be improved.

The following are common indicators of a strong LinkedIn headline. We evaluated your headline against each of these criteria.

   Headline length

Your headline is too short (4 words, 43 characters long). Top LinkedIn headlines take advantage of the 120 character limit and are 7 - 12 words long. You should add more detail into your headline. Keywords listed in the Headline field will increase your ranking among other users for those search terms.

Full Explanation

Headline Examples

Your LinkedIn headline is prime marketing real estate - it appears everywhere your name does and gives recruiters/prospects a quick overview of who you are and why they should click your profile.

By default, LinkedIn sets your headline as your current job/company (e.g. Developer at Google). However, this doesn't effectively convey your skills or expertise.

Search:
Additionally, your headline is an important element of LinkedIn's search algorithms. You should add in keywords that will help you appear higher in LinkedIn search results. For example, if a recruiter was looking to hire a 'Java Developer', and you haven't included the keyword 'Java' in your headline, then you won't appear in search results and recruiters won't contact you for that position.

Our recommendation is to be more specific in your headline, and add in keywords and certifications that you expect recruiters and your prospects to search for. That way, you'll not only appear higher in search results, but also get more people clicking into your profile.

Here are five examples of good LinkedIn headlines. Note how they are descriptive and include keywords that the candidates want to appear in search results for.

Freelance Software Developer with 5+ years experience in Java, Rails, C# | Full Stack Engineer

Instead of a simple headline like 'Freelance Developer' or 'Self Employed', we can see how the candidate is more specific about what programming languages he has experience in and includes relevant keywords. This candidate is much more likely to generate leads for his freelance business through LinkedIn as he/she would show up in search results for 'Software Engineer', 'Java Developer', etc.

VP Sales | Revenue Growth in Cloud-Enabled Technology Solutions | Product Development & Sales Operations Leadership

This is a great headline and is a much better improvement over the LinkedIn default of 'Vice President of Sales'. The use of keywords such as 'Product Development' and 'Sales Operations' means that this candidate is likely to appear higher in recruiter's search results for searches like "Product Growth".

CPM-certified Product Manager | Experience creating value from data and delivering products used by 10M+ users

This candidate has clearly tailored his profile to opportunities he is looking for. He's added in a certification he has, the job title he wants ("Product Manager"), and keywords closely aligned with the role ('data', 'users'). He's described the impressive scale of products he's worked with in the past ('10M+') which also acts as a hook for recruiters to look into his profile further. It's also important to note that this is a great example of a headline one could use, even if they are not currently employed.

Java Software Developer | Recent College Graduate Seeking Entry-Level Programming Position

If you're a student or you've just graduated, be specific about the roles you want in your headline. It's a wasted opportunity to say, "Graduate from XYZ University", since recruiters and hiring managers are not searching for those terms. Instead, they're searching for terms such as "entry-level software developer". You want to be sure you end up in search results when they search for those terms.

Social Media Manager with Experience Growing Shopify Stores from 10K to 1M Visits/Month

If you're looking for leads and prospects for your social media business, this would act as the perfect headline. Any LinkedIn user that comes across any content you post, comment, or share, is several times more likely to click into your profile than if your headline was just 'Social Media Manager'.

   Minimal use of special characters

Great. You haven't overused special characters or symbols in your LinkedIn headline.

No ineffective clichés or buzzwords used

Great - you haven't used any ineffective clichés or buzzwords that are considered to be overused, vague and ineffective (Read more). Examples of these words include 'motivated', 'team player' or 'hardworking'.

Summary

0%
Needs Review

Unlike a resume, a summary is required on your LinkedIn profile and gives you a chance to make a great first impression to recruiters, potential clients, and other professionals who rely on LinkedIn to learn about you.

View your summary

All aspects of consumer internet and software. Focus is on product development, innovation, business strategy, and finance, but includes general management, operations, business operations, business development, talent management, and marketing. Strong experience in both seed-stage companies (paypal, linkedin, facebook, zynga, last.fm, flickr) and growth companies (mozilla, linkedin, zynga, paypal.)

Specialties: General management, product development, business models, strategy, negotiation, financing, deal structure, international, marketing, brand development, brand management, businessdevelopment, public relations, press strategy, payments infrastructure, financial services, mergersand acquisitions, start-ups, business development, software development, operations centers, boardmanagement, investing.

We think your summary can be improved significantly.

The following are common indicators of a strong LinkedIn summary. We evaluated your summary against each of these criteria.

   Summary length

Your summary is too short at 86 words. Top LinkedIn profiles take advantage of the 2000 character limit and usually have summaries between 200-300 words long. Consider adding extra detail to your summary to let recruiters and prospects know more about you. This might include adding a list of technical skills, interests, extracurricular activities and measurable accomplishments.

Sample LinkedIn summaries

   Minimal use of special characters

Great. You haven't overused special characters or symbols in your LinkedIn summary.

No ineffective clichés or buzzwords used

Great - you haven't used any ineffective clichés, buzzwords and adverbs that are considered to be overused, vague and ineffective (Read more). Examples of these words include 'meticulously', 'team player' or 'hardworking'.

   No call to action found

It's important that prospects and recruiters know how to reach you. You can either include your email, Twitter profile link, website or anywhere else they can reach you.

We couldn't find an email address or Twitter handle in your LinkedIn summary. Consider adding a separate email address that's dedicated to your LinkedIn contacts.

Not enough quantified examples of your achievements

Your summary doesn't include any quantified examples of your achievements. Consider adding at least 3 numbers and metrics to your summary. This shows prospects and recruiters the kind of impact you can have.

Your LinkedIn Summary (Metrics underlined)

All aspects of consumer internet and software. Strong experience in both seed-stage companies (paypal, linkedin, facebook, zynga, last.fm, flickr) and growth companies (mozilla, linkedin, zynga, paypal.)

Importance of Quantified Achievements

If you want to land clients or job interviews through your LinkedIn profile, your summary needs to demonstrate how you are able to add value and deliver impact. To do this, you need to use numbers and metrics that provide quantifiable examples of your achievements. This helps prospects, recruiters and hiring managers know what kind of impact you can have at their company. For example, you can describe how work you’ve done has contributed to an increase in revenue.

Here’s an example of a good line you could use on your summary:
At XYZ Company, I designed, developed and executed a customer referral program, which led to a 50% increase in the company's referral business and $2MM of incremental revenue.

Notice how we explicitly describe the impact of our work (e.g. % increase in referrals and revenue) — doing this makes your achievements more meaningful. Common metrics you can use are the amount of revenue you generated or how much money you saved your company. Similarly, you can even quantify your experiences with things like the size of the project you worked on or the time you saved your team. It's useful to understand the kind of metrics that are relevant to your industry, and use those in your profile.

If you need some further guidance on writing more accomplishment-driven bullet points, here's an article for how to write effective bullet points for your resume. The advice is applicable to your LinkedIn profile too: click here.

We also recommend visiting Metrics.  It is the only handpicked list of metrics you can use to quantify your achievements, sorted by industry.

Work Experience

0%
Great

Unlike a resume which is tailored to a specific job or industry, your LinkedIn profile can contain all your work experiences. We recommend listing at least 3 roles / work experiences on your LinkedIn profile. You have listed 31 jobs in your LinkedIn profile.

Your job titles are also a highly indexed field on LinkedIn search. This means that if a recruiter or prospect searches "Customer Service", and your current or recent job is "Customer Service Specialist", you'll show up higher in search results. Be sure to add keywords to your job titles that your target audience will be searching for!

Perfect

Your education section looks complete - well done! It contains the name of the educational institution, dates you went there and activities/societies you were involved in.

It's worth noting that adding in your education also ensures you are shown to alumni that attended your school/university, and increases your network's overall reach.

Unlike a resume, you can also add in any additional courses (e.g. online courses) or certifications that matter to your career or personal direction.

Other Considerations

You have an Honors and Awards section

Great. You've included an Honors/Awards section.

   Use a LinkedIn custom link

If you haven't already, set your LinkedIn profile URL to your name or brand, so it appears as linkedin.com/in/[yourname]. If you leave what LinkedIn automatically does for you, there'll be lots of additional numbers/characters. See how to do this here.

   Professional photo

A professional photo on your LinkedIn profile is likely to increase the number of people clicking into your profile and improve first impressions.

   Add additional sections and media

Add additional sections (e.g. Languages, Volunteering Experience, Recommendations or Projects) or media for a more complete LinkedIn profile. Top LinkedIn users share content frequently on their profile to ensure they are engaged with their network.
